The aim of the Dark Sky, Astro Tourism pilot was to proactively engage with the tourism sector in order to raise awareness of Astro Tourism.
The aim of the Dark Sky, Astro Tourism pilot was to proactively engage with the tourism sector in order to raise awareness of Dark Sky and demonstrate how Astro Tourism can be packaged and presented to tourists and encourage the sector to engage with a new all year-round market aiding the business community to benefit in the traditionally difficult ‘shoulder seasons’
The Dark Sky pilot worked with 8 tourism businesses on Anglesey each of whom participated in a series of workshops and masterclasses. This was followed by one to one sessions and each business was presented with binoculars and star charts to enable them to learn and further understand how Dark Sky could be used to encourage new tourists to the island.
A Dark Sky Anglesey Business Group and Facebook page was created with a view to further raise awareness of the potential that Dark Sky initiatives could bring to the business sector and local communities.
Two events were arranged to coincide with the Summer and Winter Solstices, the 1st at the Anglesey Showground which focused on Solar Gazing and included planetarium, film sessions, rocket making and face painting, the 2nd was a Winter Wonderland Star Festival at Tyddyn Môn including Star gazing, planetarium, food, crafts, storytelling and music.
Both events attracted large crowds who appreciated the new experiences and the Dark Sky Business group, Natural Resource Wales and the Local Authority were fully involved and informed the participants on the effects of light pollution on biodiversity.
The Dark Sky Business Group were happy with the outcomes of the project and were keen to package Astro Tourism Breaks, however, to date, no packaged breaks have been created, however, the businesses are promoting Anglesey Dark Sky and hope to continue to support the local authorities application for Dark Sky Community Designation Status.
