The Holyhead Land train Pilot resulted from a positive feasibility study conducted by Martin Higgitt Associates. The study demonstrated that a Land Train service for Holyhead would benefit the local economy by joining up area’s attractions and enhancing the visitor experience. This Land Train could be used by different visitor markets, including day visitors, staying visitors, cruise ship visitors and day or short stay ferry passengers, as well as local families, to enjoy a day or half day visit to Holyhead and explore more of the local area.
At the end of July and beginning of August 2019 a Land Train with two carriages was hired by Land Train Hire Nationwide and a pilot was undertaken. Marketing involved the production of A-Boards at boarding points, posters, a Facebook page and word of mouth.
The start point was Newry Beach, then on to Holyhead Breakwater Park, into Town and its attractions and back to the Newry. The ticketed service trialled one full route and a hop on hop off option and was in operation for 7 days from 10.00am to 5.30pm however this was quickly adjusted to 11.00 – 4.00pm to satisfy demand.
On-board questionnaires were completed and facilitated by a group of volunteers operating in shifts and the pilot period succeeded in servicing 1022 passengers with no complaints!
The pilot demonstrated that a Land Train operation would be sustainable and a valuable asset to Holyhead, therefore, a local social enterprise has submitted a bid to the Anglesey Charitable Trust for funding to purchase a Land Train and to run in on a commercial basis.
